Most people think that only blatant lying is forbidden, but in reality there are many forms of lying:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise.”

Truth is the ladder that a person climbs to reach the highest levels of Paradise.

And the one who speaks the truth is honored by Allah.

On the Day of Judgment, when people stand up for their deeds, the truthful will be under the shade of Allah’s Throne.

The Glory of a Truthful Person

Allah Almighty says in the Quran:

“O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with the truthful.”

(At-Tawbah: 119)

“O you who have believed! Fear Allah and be with the truthful.”

Allah Almighty commands the company of the truthful, not the liars.

Why?

Because truthfulness is a sign of faith, and lying is hypocrisy.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

“The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and when he is entrusted with a trust, he betrays it.”

(Bukhari)

A true story: The truth saved

The story of Hazrat Ka’b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) is well-known.

He was unable to participate in the Battle of Tabuk, and when he appeared before the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), he could have easily saved his life by lying.

But he told the truth:

“O Messenger of Allah! I did not make any excuse; it was my mistake.”

Due to his truthfulness, Allah praised him by mentioning his repentance in the Quran.

(Surah At-Tawbah 117-118)
